With the successful completion of rail platform reconstruction at four stations in downtown Dallas, attention now shifts to the remainder of DART's Red and Blue line stations. All boarding platforms systemwide are being modified to accommodate the more accessible, low floor rail cars (see photo to the right).

Starting in June 2009, level boarding construction will begin at the White Rock and 8th & Corinth stations. The project will ultimately enable all platforms to allow wheelchairs, carriages and persons with mobility issues direct access to each train's center section without the need for special platforms. The special platforming currently located at the end of each station platform will be removed by December 2010.

Please note: Although construction for level boarding modifications may be completed at a station as indicated in the construction schedule below, DART Rail is not yet operating in a level boarding mode of operation.

For customers using wheelchairs or otherwise needing assistance to board the train, it's important to note DART will continue using high block boarding areas at the stations until the platform work is complete. To ensure access, these customers will need to continue boarding from the high block area during the platform modification.
Unlike the downtown construction, which closed each station for approximately 30 days, most outlying station projects will require a station's closure over 1-3 weekends only. In each instance, banners will advise customers to prepare for closures during upcoming weekends, and construction schedules will be available on www.DART.org/LB or by calling 214-979-1111.

Image: Board shuttles at the red bus stop near each stationWhen a station is out of service, bus shuttles will provide transportation between the site and the nearest available station or stations (see schedule below). Board shuttles at the red bus stop near each station. Area businesses will remain open, and signage will direct patrons in case normal access is blocked. Rail schedules will remain unchanged; however, passengers needing to use the shuttles are encouraged to allow extra time for their trips.

As always, we urge you to be alert around any construction area and to refer to the safety tips at the end of this message. In the meantime, look for updates at www.DART.org/LB or call 214-979-1111 for the latest information.
