Commuters are parking their cars, pocketing their gas cards, and jumping on DART.
With temperatures and gas prices boiling over, North Texans are turning to public transit.
DART's bus and rail ridership increased in the summer of 2006 as gasoline hit a record high of $3.13 per gallon. Now with average prices surging past $3 again in 2007, DART's providing more gas relief.
According to BIGresearch's May Consumer Intentions & Actions Survey of more than 8,300 consumers nationwide, rising gas prices are pressing hard on consumer confidence. "With expectations for even higher gas prices, consumers continue to look for ways to stretch their paychecks by deferring purchases," says Gary Drenik, president and CEO of BIGresearch.

Jared Aldinger hits the books and his laptop during his daily commute from Dallas to law school in Fort Worth. |
An easy way for North Texans to stretch their paychecks is to hop on public transit. Jared Aldinger saves money – and puts his commute time to good use – by riding DART Rail and the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) from Mockingbird Station to downtown Fort Worth. Getting off at the ITC Station, he walks two blocks to Texas Wesleyan University where he's getting his law degree. Aldinger makes the commute four days a week – five if his study group meets on Saturday.
"With gas prices as high as they are, it's a heck of a deal to ride DART and the TRE."

"With gas prices as high as they are, it's a heck of a deal to ride DART and the TRE," he says. "But I also like the convenience of being able to get things done. I don't have to worry about traffic and driving. I study on the way to class and back, and by the time I get home I'm done."
Aldinger owns a car but sometimes jumps on DART for easy in-and-out to big events. "I've ridden to the Auto Show at the Dallas Convention Center and to Mavericks games. It's a good way to go," he says.
