DART BIKE & RIDE PROGRAM
It's for your health. Why set aside extra time for working out? Make the most of your day by biking to work. Bicycling is one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercise. You'll burn approximately 10 calories per minute* on your ride to and from the transit center.
It's for your planet.
The average commuter contributes approximately 291 pounds of pollutants to the earth's atmosphere each year.** By riding your bike to work one day each week — instead of driving your car — you can reduce your share of pollution by 20%. One day every other week equals a 10% reduction. And even just one day each month lowers your share by 5%.†
It's for your bottom line.
Commuting alone in a medium size automobile costs about $6,871 per year and consumes approximately 560 gallons of fuel.** Compare this to the cost of a DART Annual Pass:
| • Local Annual Pass | $500 | |
| • Premium Annual Pass | $800 |
The Bike & Ride Program also makes cents to your insurance company, as most provide discounts to drivers that use transit to get to and from work.
Carrier Racks on DART Buses
In the Fall of 2008, DART will begin to install bike racks on DART buses. Some things to remember:
- Customers are allowed to use the racks as they are installed but should be reminded that initially, buses with racks may not be available on the return trip. DART does allow riders to carry bikes onboard provided the bicycles are clean and there is room on the bus.
- Cyclists are responsible for loading and unloading their bicycles on the carrier racks. Bus operators are not allowed to assist. Cyclists use the carrier racks at their own risk and DART is not responsible for damaged or stolen bicycles.
- Cyclists are reminded that while DART encourages biketrans commuting, the safety and comfort of all passengers is of the utmost importance and care should be exercised when riding, parking and carrying bicycles onboard. Courtesy and alertness on the part of the cyclist will ensure a pleasant ride for everyone.
- Bike racks will not be available on Champion 30 foot buses, Paratransit, On-Call or Flex Service vehicles.
DART wants biketrans commuting to be as convenient as possible. That's why we've installed bike racks and lockers at many rail stations and transit centers. Bike racks are free of charge. Just lock and go! Or, for added security, rent a bike locker.
